Levine et al., Human Reproduction Update 2017 and 2023. Data covers 1973 to 2018.
Sperm concentration declined 51%. Total sperm count, which also factors in ejaculate volume, declined 62%. Both figures are from the same Levine 2023 study. The 16M threshold is the WHO 2021 official lower reference limit for sperm concentration. The 40M boundary is based on published research showing the chance of conceiving naturally decreases progressively below this level and is not a formal WHO classification. Speak to your GP if you have concerns.
